Google Business Profile Tips Specifically for Roofing Companies
The Google Business Profile is the single most important tool for local roofing SEO and it’s completely free. Yet most roofing companies either haven’t set it up properly or aren’t using it after the initial setup. Here are 8 tips that actually move the needle.
Tip 1: Choose ‘Roofing Contractor’ as Your Primary Category
Your primary category is the most important field in your entire GBP. It tells Google what type of business you are and directly determines which searches you rank for in the map pack.
Do this: Primary = ‘Roofing Contractor.’ Add secondary categories like ‘Gutter Service’ to capture additional searches. Don’t set ‘General Contractor’ as primary you’ll compete against every construction company in your city.
Tip 2: Write a Description That Sounds Like a Human
You have 750 characters. Most roofers leave it blank or stuff it with keywords. Include: your city name, your key services, a credibility signal (years in business, certifications), and a soft call-to-action at the end. Write for both the algorithm and the homeowner.
Tip 3: Upload Real Project Photos Every Week
Profiles with photos get significantly more direction requests and website clicks. Upload before/after photos of real jobs, photos of your crew and vehicles, and any certifications. Aim for 5+ new photos per month. Never use stock photos homeowners can tell, and it kills trust.
Tip 4: Post a GBP Update Every Single Week
Most roofers don’t know GBP has a Posts feature it works like a mini social media feed on your Google listing. Posting weekly tells Google your business is active. Post ideas: a completed project with before/after photo, a seasonal homeowner tip, a link to your latest blog post.
Tip 5: Build a System to Collect Reviews After Every Job
Reviews are the most powerful ranking signal for the local map pack. Create a text message template you send to every customer within 48 hours of job completion. Include a direct link to your Google review page. Make it a one-tap process for them.
Example text: ‘Hi [Name], it was great working on your roof! If you’re happy with the work, would you mind leaving us a quick Google review? Here’s the link: [your link]. Thank you! [Your Name]’
Tip 6: Use the Services Section for Every Keyword You Want
The Services section lets you list every service with descriptions. List everything: Roof Replacement, Roof Repair, Emergency Roof Repair, Storm Damage Repair, Flat Roof Installation, Metal Roofing, Gutter Installation, Roof Inspections, Insurance Claims Assistance. Write a 2-3 sentence description for each.
Tip 7: Pre-Populate Q&A on Your Profile
The Q&A feature lets anyone ask or answer questions about your business. Take control by pre-populating 5-10 questions yourself. Include your city name and services naturally in the answers.
Tip 8: Make Sure Your NAP Is Identical Everywhere Online
NAP = Name, Address, Phone Number. Google cross-references your info across hundreds of websites. If any are inconsistent, it creates confusion and hurts your ranking. ‘Peak Roofing’ on one site and ‘Peak Roofing Solutions LLC’ on another even small differences like this hurt you.
The roofers dominating the map pack in your city are actively managing their GBP every week. The good news? Most of your competitors aren’t which means doing even half of these tips consistently puts you ahead.
